The rented Subaru sped along the highway wending its way between evergreen forested mountains and along rivers and creeks, Derek at the wheel, Ruth in the passenger seat and Padme sitting in back.

"I cannot believe this." Ruth shook her head. "I cannot fucking believe that this is happening."

"Your parents did give you an ultimatum about meeting me," Derek pointed out. "At least this means they can hassle you about that anymore."

"It really sucks," Padme offered from the back seat. Derek glared at her in the rearview mirror. "What?" she protested. "Ruth's parents are kind of assholes. And by 'kind of,' I mean 'really.'"

"They can't be that bad. I mean, sure parents can make things awkward sometimes -- case in point, my parents about twenty minutes ago -- but we'll make the best of this and still have a great time."

Ruth twisted around in her seat and pointedly addressed her friend. "He doesn't get it."

"He will, though," said Padme. "Poor guy."

"Poor us," Ruth corrected.

Padme feigned lifting an imaginary glass. "I'll drink to that." She took a sip of her pretend beverage. "And cowboys."

Ruth rolled her eyes. "I doubt that there will be cowboys. At least, not the kind you expect." She turned back to Derek. "Right?"

Padme leaned forward, eyeing the man. "Here's what I'm looking for. Tall. Wide brimmed hats. Boots. Ass-hugging jeans. Ruggedly handsome. Moderately windswept. Polite on the street, naughty in the sheets. What are my chances?"

"Well," he said in a sly tone, "I can't speak to how they perform in bed, but yeah, last I heard there were guys matching that description around here." He smirked. "We've also got some ranch hands that boast beer bellies and unkempt facial hair and keep spit rags in their back pockets. You looking for guys like that, too?"

"And on your family's ranch?" Padme prodded, ignoring his jibe.

"Usually, yes, but now that it's the off season, not so much."

Padme sat back, scowling. "Ugh. But," she added, "Ruth, we are going to avoid the shit out of your parents. Let Candy and Jack keep them busy."

"She's right," Derek pointed out. "My parents probably love yours."

"That doesn't speak well to the value of their loving me," Ruth muttered.

Derek ignored her, continuing, "We'll find ways to keep out of their hair, and let them entertain each other. And," he reached out a hand and ran it up her inner thigh, letting it linger close to her pussy for a moment that made Ruth's breath hitch, "you can count on us enjoying some quality alone time together."

"I'm right here," Padme protested loudly, making Ruth blush and Derek blow a kiss at Padme's reflection in rearview mirror. "Although it's kind of cute, too. As long as that alone time happens in a location out of my seeing and hearing."

"Don't worry, each guest or family group all gets their own cabin," Derek chuckled. "That's why my parents always host the reunions.
